Sir Emeka Offor Commits One Billion Dollars To Polio Eradication , Says Nigeria Ranks 3rd In The World




                               
 Rotary International Polio Ambassador, Sir Emeka Offor yesterday said Nigeria according to the recent ranking ranks 3rd in the polio most
prevalent countries in the world trailing Afghanistan and Pakistan who
came first and second respectively.

Speaking yesterday during the flag off of the Polio Eradication
Programme at Oraifite, Ekwusigo council area of Anambra state, Offor said the
country at the present is at the mercy of polio disease, a situation
he said could be eradicated very soon.

Offor flanked by Governor Peter Obi of Anambra state further disclosed that the essence of the programme was to officially launch an aggressive programme to immunize the children against the deadly disease. He expressed satisfaction that the prevalence of polio has been reduced from 350,000 cases in 1986 to about 200 in2012 with nigeria having only 53 cases.

He said his foundation, Sir Emeka Offor Foundation had over the
years intensified efforts to provide logistics and awareness to the
people towards immunizing their children against the polio disease.

He said the as at the moment, Nigeria is still among the three
countries in the world where polio mellitus could still be found,
adding that Nigeria is having the disease because of movement of
people from various places to the other.

In his remarks, Governor Peter Obi commended Sir Emeka Offor for his
humanitarian services to his people which he said was in line with the
policy of his administration to provide health care to the people of
the state.

Obi said that Sir Emeka Offor remains the first and only
black man to donate 1 billion dollars towards the fight against polio
in the whole world and reiterated the readiness of the state
government to partner with the foundation to provide free medical care
to the people.

The District Governor of Rotary International, District 9140, Mr.
Charles Uche Onianwa said Sir Emeka Offor through the Rotary
International had touched many lives positively especially fight
against polio and other children killer diseases.
