Onitsha Main Market Stood Still For Orji Uzor Kalu, As Archbishop Lashes Out On Journalists


                                       


                                
Thousands of traders yesterday trooped out from their shop at the Main Market, Onitsha to receive the Management team of The Sun Publishing Limited led by former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu during their weekly Monday prayer.

Guest speaker  at the prayer session, Prophetess Joy Chinyere of Victory Base Deliverance Ministry, 3-3, Onitsha  urged traders to develop a new attitude towards reorganizing their live to suit the ways of the Lord and thanked The Sun Newspaper for being the light with which Nigeria see. She urged the traders to always be alert in their spiritual lives.

In his remarks, the Chairman, Onitsha Main Market Amalgamated Traders' Union, OMMATU, Chief Innocent Agudiegwu said traders have over the years accepted The Sun newspaper as the voice of the nation.

Chief Agudiegwu said Sun newspaper remains the best in the country, adding "if you have read The Sun newspaper, you have read all but if you have not read The Sun, you have not read any newspaper"

The Market leader thanked the former Governor of Abia state, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu for finding time to come and worship with the traders, adding that it showed a life full of humility and thanked him for all the helps he has rendered to the traders especially during a fire disaster that rendered traders helpless.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Archbishop and Metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province Most Rev Dr. Valerian Okeke tasked journalists on credible journalism in line with the ethics of their calling.

Archbishop stated this when team of The Sun Publishing Limited, lead by the Publisher, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu paid him a courtesy visit at the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha.

Okeke while commanding The Sun newspaper for enlightening the public also reminded them that the task of verifying all news materials before pushing them to the public remains a task that must be achieved.

Okeke said:"You must be sensitive to all news materials you publish and push to the public. It is always good to verify the news items before you publish and make sure you don't write news that is false, half truth or entirely false just because you want to sell you papers"

"You have to stand by the decent journalism embellished with the ethics and norms of journalism. We appreciate your works because you inform, educate and enlighten the public but only be sensitive to the negative sides and avoid it" he said.

Rev. Okeke also remembered with nostalgia who he enrolled into school of journalism in United Kingdom because of his love for the profession and urged journalists to obey the rules as his colleagues.

Reacting, the Publisher of The Sun Newspaper, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu commended the Catholic Archbishop for his contribution towards sustenance of peace in Nigeria and Igbo land in particular.

Dr. Kalu promised that The Sun shall not let the people down by being at the vanguard for new face of journalism in the country where ethics of the profession would be enthroned.

Kalu said: "The Sun does not stand for or against anybody or political party. Our primary aim is to disseminate information, educate our people through robust journalism and that we have done over the years, your admonition today is for us to develop more interest in avoiding bad journalism especially now that we know that a Catholic Archbishop is our member, so journalists with us shall now be more careful’’.
