Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano has reiterated the commitment of his administration to advance the course of women in the State, assuring equal participation in governance.
The Governor spoke weekend at Women Development Centre, Awka, Anambra State during the 2014 International Women’s day which gears towards accessing the level of impact and progress made by women in the socio-economic growth of their various countries.
The theme of this year’s celebration is, “Equality for women is progress for all”. Obiano noted that his administration will focus more on women development and empowerment which he said will bring out the value in Anambra women.
Obiano represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Oseloka Obaze enjoined the women to ensure that they don’t negate the role of training up their children in the way of God, stressing that children are the greatest asset of every family.
He said: “We will continue to be women friendly and my administration will surpass the 35 percent affirmative action advocated by Nigerian women. I will support my wife and the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oby Okeke in sensitising rural women on the need to achieve the 35 percent affirmative action”, he said.
The Governor’s wife, Chief (Mrs) Ebelechukwu Obiano in
her remarks emphasised the salient responsibilities of women in the society but
frowned deeply at the recent killing of school children by Boko Haram
insurgency at Buni Yadi in Yobe State and kidnap of 18 school girls.
She attributed such inhumanity to man as lacuna in education system, access to employment and social justice to women who she said, are custodians of various homes.
The First Lady confirmed the promise of her husband
in the area of access to finance through cooperative society, skill acquisition
through vocational education and promotion of children and aged people’s health
through free Medicare.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social
Development, Lady Henrietta Agbata commended APGA Government in the State for
its routine empowerment programmes for women especially some of them in the
hinterlands adding that APGA government since inception is being gender
friendly.
Her words: “This government is responding positively
to the yearnings and aspirations of women and children” she remarks.
In her lead paper presentation, a guest speaker, Mrs Chimeze Ileka urged women to hold tenaciously their civic responsibility of caring for their children and husbands, regretting that some women abandoned their responsibilities in pursuit of power and gender balance.

According to her, “Women should not fight for their rights alone but that of their children. They should show love to their children and respect their husbands as we proclaim the equality”.
High point of the event include distribution of empowerment equipment to the women which include, oil processing machine, garri processing machine, palm oil processing machine, motorised grinding machine among others.
Beneficiaries, Lady Virgy Nwankwo of Ezinwanne corporative society and Lady Chinwe Egbuna from Onitsha North council area commended Obiano’s wife for the gesture.
