Veterinary Association Set To Close Substandard Slaughter Houses In Anambra

Nigeria Veterinary Association, Anambra state chapter is set to close all substandard slaughter houses in the state, even as it lamented the absence of Veterinary Hospital or clinic in the state.

Chairman of state chapter, Dr.Webster Okonkwo announced this in a Ekwulobia in an interview with newsmen.

He said that substandard slaughter houses were serious threat to public health in the state, lamenting the absence of standard veterinary facilities, absence of a veterinary hospital, lack  of reference laboratory as well as non-availability of a standard veterinary clinic.

Dr.Okonkwo lamented the absence of a veterinary hospital in Anambra state which has culminated into a situation where by vet doctors traveled to veterinary teaching hospital at Nsukka, Enugu state to confirm diagnosis and references which according to him was a serious setback to vet doctors in the state.

Okonkwo who is the chief executive officer of Tropical Veterinary Centre Ekwulobia revealed that part of the advocacy the association was making was to prevail on the powers that be to establish a veterinary hospital in Awka as well as 3 other veterinary clinics, one for each of the 3 senatorial zones in the state as it would boost vet practice a great deal.

He said that the association has also prevailed on the state government to rehabilitate and build new slaughter facilities across the state because some of the slaughter houses were dilapidated and an eyesore to the public just as the association was equally fighting quackery which according to him was why the association was regulating the activities of veterinarians in the state.

Dr.Okonkwo further expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Obi for employing more Veterinary doctors up to 15 to augment the 6 that were in service even as he appealed for more opportunities to be given to more veterinary doctors in the state service.

He said that the cardinal objective of the Anambra state veterinary medical association for 2014 was the creation of the ministry of animal health and production in the state as it has direct dealings with human health.
