Consumers of Electricity in Nnewi
and environs, Anambra state yesterday lamented the poor power supply in the
commercial city.
They spoke at the palace of traditional
ruler of Nnewi, HRH Igwe Keneth Orizu 111 when the Managing Director and Chief
Executive Officer of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Mr Robert
Dickerman visited Nnewi Business Unit.
Tactical committee of Nnewi
electricity consumers with Mr Mbadiwe Okongwu as Chairman and Mr Okey Nwosu,
Secretary, respectively told the visiting M/D and CEO of the electricity
company that the industrial community never had power supply when it needed it.
They added that the non adequate
power supply had caused commercial users of electricity to resort to the use of
private generators with the attendant high diesel consumption.
"And manufacturers who
attempted using your power to turn their plants have paid dearly in parts
replacement, outright damage of costly equipment and irredeemable loss of
products, "the committee had stated.
Responding ,Managing Director and
Chief Executive Officer of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Mr
Robert Dickerman assured electricity consumers within the five Eastern States
of better days ahead regarding quality electricity distribution but called for
the consumers' co-operation.
He promised that the company would
upgrade equipment inherited and effect repairs to them for an improved
customer’s service.
He, however, regretted that over 50%
of revenue accruable to the electricity power generating company was lost due
to meter by-pass by those he called unpatriotic electricity consumers. He
assured that tariffs would be reduced so long as customers continued to pay
their bills.
The Manager of Nnewi Business Unit,
Engineer L.N. Nmaram while receiving Mr Dickerman told him that the staff of
the unit had always maintained good customer relationship and had also built
customers’ loyalty despite the erratic nature of electricity supply in the
industrial city.
Nmaram brought to the attention of
Mr Dickerman the on-going construction of 132/33 kv substation at Otolo
yet to be completed "even as the Onitsha-Nnewi 132kv line is yet to be
strung."
"Sir, we do hope that your
visit will influence the efforts of the stakeholders even though the project is
not under your office, your position is an asset. Its completion will turn
everything around in Nnewi Business Unit and the quantum of cash collection
will triple, "Engineer Nmaram said. He announced that the Nnewi Business
Unit had started operating on Electric Management System (EMS2000) of billing
as he appealed for working materials including utility vehicles, IT components
and safety materials to increase productivity.
