In its bid to chart a progressive and purposeful course for
the Igbo Nation, a new Pan Igbo Cultural Organization, Odenigbo Peoples
Assembly (OPA), has emerged, with its National President, Chief Kelechukwu
Chidiadi, calling on Ndigbo to rise and speak with one voice, so as to advance
their economic, social and political wellbeing in Nigeria.
Speaking during their inaugural meeting in Enugu, the Enugu
State capital, Chidiadi insisted that there was need to focus on the promotion
of Igbo interests in Nigeria, and regretted that Ndigbo had not been adequately
represented in all spheres of our national life, despite their unequalled
contributions to the overall progress of the country.
According to the OPA president, his organization would
tirelessly work for the interests of Ndigbo in the South-East and the
South-South Geo-Political zones, both for their development and the progress
and stability of Nigeria.
He assured that the Assembly had already received the
support of some well known Igbo leaders and traditional rulers, and assured
that consultations were on-going so as to get the support of more Igbo leaders
of Thought and traditional rulers.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the OPA Board of Trustees
(BoT), Chief Chinedu Mba, expressed optimism that the group will ensure peace
and progress among all Igbos, as well as restore their pride of place and
dignity in our national life.
He assured that OPA will also champion the course of uniting
Ndigbo, so as to focus on achieving the Igbo agenda in the national polity.
The
National Secretary of the Assembly, Chief Chris Okonkwo, in his speech,
highlighted some of the aims and objectives of the organization, while its
Legal Adviser, Barr. Destiny Nnagbo, stated that one of the primary objectives
of the Assembly, was to unite the Igbos for the collective development of Igbo
land and the country in general.
At the end of their meeting, the OPA announced membership of
its executive and functionaries, including the Enugu and Anambra State Chapter Chairmen, Mr. Linus Ali and
Chief Lawrence Anibelu respectively, while others are Women Leaders for Ebonyi
and Enugu States, National Youth leader, and Welfare officer, among others.
