It is no longer news that Anambra lawmakers have
their offices in their cars hence their official vehicles currently serve dual
purpose of conveying the lawmakers to the legislative complex for house
proceedings and for other official duties rather than legislative business.
This is as a result of the fact that the current
legislative building is undergoing wear and tear as a visit to the house of
assembly complex in Awka will better tell the story of the pathetic state of
the hallowed chambers. Most worrisome is the epileptic power supply therein.
Many a time the legislators have been confronted
with the stack reality of having their plenary in very suffocating atmosphere
due to lack of electricity as the lawmakers would improvise hand-fans to
prevent themselves from being drenched in heat. The situation was the same on
the day budget presentation by the state governor Mr.Peter Obi.
On presentation of the 2014 budget by the state
governor Mr.Peter Obi during plenary, the session was interrupted by power
outage and the rest of the budget presentation was done under heat and
even the state governor was sweating profusely.
To this end, THE UNION spoke to Mr.Clems
Ohaekwesi a staff of the state house of assembly complex on the plight of the
legislative chambers and he said '' i have been to several house of assembly;
take for instance the one at Asaba is a befitting house of assembly but here in
Anambra who do you ask when the honourable members who are representing their
different constituencies can't even talk....''
Mr.Ohaekwesi maintained that everything was not
working in the state house of assembly adding that the structures were
dilapidated.'' look at the gate it looks as if you are coming to see a
herbalist..' he observed emphasizing that the present state of the legislative
chambers doesn't worth it.He however stated that the lawmakers have a lot to do
revamp the status of the assembly complex where legislation were made for the
state citizenry.
Further more he noted that the lawmakers don't
even have offices as their cars were their offices where they kept files
and other vital documents.Mr.Ohaekwesi therefore called on the state government
to make more funds available for the upkeep of the state house of assembly
complex in 2014 budget currently being implemented.
The house committee chairman on house services
and member representing Anaoch 1 state constituency Hon.Ejiofor Ebele Leonard
in his reaction to the present condition of the state house of assembly complex
told THE UNION that a new house of complex was currently under construction and
that the issue of office space for lawmakers will soon be a thing of the
past when the building is completed.
On the erratic power
supply, the house committee chairman on house services said that a new
generating set was in place to provide alternative source of power but the said
machine was malfunctioning due to some electrical problems expressing optimism
that the problem will also be rectified soon.
