Tragedy has once more struck the Nigerian journalism industry, this time claiming a veteran journalist, Mr. Kalu Okwara, an Assistant Editor with The Nation at the paper's headquarters in Lagos, South-West Nigeria.
After many years of service to Champion, Okwara joined Newswatch last year but was soon on the move again. He joined The Nation early last month but was involved in an auto accident on his way from work on the night of January 23, losing the battle for life on January 31.
Okwara’s wife, who is still reeling from shock, blamed his death on poor medical attention. She told News Express: “We took him to Ahmadiyya Muslim Hospital, where he was not given good attention. Four days after his bosses from The Nation came and took him to LASUTH (Lagos University Teaching Hospital) where, after tests, the doctors discovered blood clot in his brain as a result of the accident. The doctors at LASUTH did their best but he couldn’t make it and died three days later.”
News Express learnt that Okwara’s body has been transported to his hometown in Abia State in the country’s South-East preparatory for burial on April 6.
