Nigeria's ex-vice-president Atiku Abubakar says he is defecting from President Goodluck Jonathan's party to join an opposition coalition after 11 senators did so last week.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who last year formed a coalition within the People's Democratic Party, said Sunday he would leave to join the All Progressives Congress. He said he will do what he can to help the opposition coalition win elections to "bring true change to our country and its long-suffering people."
Jonathan's party has fractured over his perceived desire to contest elections on Feb. 14, 2015. It recently lost its majority in the House of Representatives when dozens of legislators joined the opposition.
Nigeria has a history of violent elections and there already has been conflict as Africa's biggest oil producer prepares for balloting.
