Senator Abe: Ogoni Youths block Roads

                                                 

Following the shooting of the lawmaker representing Rivers South East in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Abe, on  Sunday, scores of Ogoni youths  on Monday blocked the Elelenwo Junction area of the East-West Road.

The road blockade by the protesters around 6.30am caused a heavy traffic for about two hours before the police stormed the place to disperse them.

Abe was on Sunday shot by operatives of the Rivers State Police Command at the venue of a rally in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The lawmaker, who was flown to London for further treatment on Sunday night, was shot with a rubber bullet on the chest and leg while some members of the Save Rivers Movement were prevented from holding a rally as the police shot several teargas canisters into the air.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after they were dispersed by the police from the East-West Road, the leader of the group, who identified himself as Mr. Friday Needam, said they would not be intimidated by the police.

Explaining that the police in Rivers were on a dangerous mission, Needam stated that the Ogoni people would not fail to speak out on an issue that concerned life and death.

He said Ogoni people would never allow any son or daughter of Ogoni to be killed the way Ken Saro-Wiwa was killed.
