Governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi yesterday granted amnesty to 18 prisoners.
The lucky prisoners were drawn from Awka, Onitsha and Aguata Prisons. A breakdown shows that ten persons were released from Onitsha Prisons. They are: Nnamdi Osakwe, Chukwuma Okoye, Udeze Izunna, Ogorchi Ituma, David Christian and Emeka Uba. Others from same Onitsha Prisons are Chinedu Nwafima, Sylvester Ndidi, Chukwudum Nwobi and Ifeanyi Nnamdi.
Seven persons were released from Aguata Prisons as follows: Ekene Adimonye, Chinedu Mkpuma, Mmaduabuchi Okeke, Chinweike Ezenwosu, Chisom Mmeche, Uche Okoro and Okwuchukwu Offia while Izuchukwu Anikwelu was the only one granted amnesty from Awka Prisons.
A memo from the Office of the Secretary to the Anambra State Government signed by M. C. Anyaorah, Secretary to the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, referenced AG/AN/S.198/Vol.VII/334 and dated 31st December 2013, stated that the gesture was extended by the governor to mark the New Year celebration on January 1st, 2014.
The statement said it was accordance with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and the powers conferred on governors of States.
