Anambra Speaker Escapes Impeachment


Speaker of the Anambra Children Parliament, Uchime Ken Michael has survived an impeachment plot by members of the House following an unhealthy publication he made on behalf of the Parliamentarians against the state Government and Governor Peter Obi. 


The Speaker survived in a dramatic way at its first sitting for the year 2014 at Cana House Awka when members expressed their dissatisfaction with the manner and language with which he speaker attacked the state government.

They latter resolved through its committee on Ethics, Rule and Business to pass a vote of no confidence on the Speaker but the Speaker survived the impeachment after an open secret ballot which brought him back as the Parliamentarians pardoned and voted him back as speaker through the ballot.

Chairman of the Ethics , Rule and Business Committee, Francis Okoli and two Ambassadors representing Anambra state Children Parliament at the National level Abuja, Stanley Onyemechalu and Chidera Obi moved a motion that saved the speaker as they called for the House to work together to save the situation.

They resolved that it is better they save the face of the House together with the speaker from the problem especially now that their tenure is coming to an end.

But before the vote of no confidence , the Speaker Uchime ken Michael had tendered an unreserved apology to although verbally to the Anambra state government and Governor Peter Obi particularly for alleging that he has not been funding the Children Parliament.    

 Uchime regretted that his actions has caused unrest in the House for some time now and appealed to the Governor, Mr Obi to disregard the publication and see him as a child who is ignorant of his actions. He promised to tender a written letter of apology to the Governor, the speaker of the state House of Assembly and the Coordinators of the Parliament for taken a wrong step in the wrong direction.

 Addressing the Children’s Parliament before its adjournment , the Director Child Development , Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mr Emeka Ejide noted that the action of the Parliamentarians were not in support of the publications by Mr Speaker.

Ejide maintained that Children ‘s Parliament is under the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and as such it must be aware of any information that must go public . He regretted that the Publication has cost a lot recently because it was not coordinated and advised them to strive to bring back their lost glory. He stated that government has been funding the Parliament , commending Obi and wife for their superlative support to the parliament.
