All the 100 cases of rape were said to have been received in Kano courts during the period, while more than 40 offenders were convicted and are cooling their feet in prison.
This was disclosed by the Kano State Commissioner for Justice, Maliki Kuliya Umar, in a special session with the media in his office, yesterday.
Umar said the cases reached that number because people were now familiar with reporting such cases to police, unlike before where the victims’ parents or guardians remained mute for stigmatization reasons.
The commissioner said the rape cases were not in Kano or Nigeria alone, it was a global phenomenon. “The issue of rape is becoming problematic not only in Kano or Nigeria but globally”, he insisted.
To curb the problem in the state, Umar said: “….that is why the governor approved some funds for aggressive media campaign against rape cases in the state. As you are aware, the offence attracts a period of 14 years in prison.”
According to him, such kind of offence required a collaborative efforts from the parents, guardians, authorities and other stakeholders, advising that “all hands must be on deck to check the excesses of the problem”.
On the number of cases received by courts in the state within the period of two and a half years, he said under the category of public prosecution, they received 1,185 cases, civil litigation cases raised to 186 out of which 72 were concluded.
He further said under the category of citizens rights, 126 cases were received in 2013, and 45 cases were settled.
